Professor Michael Zuerch as a Visiting Scholar at RUN

The RUN welcomes Professor Michael Zuerch from the University of California, Berkeley, as its new visiting scholar. The scientist, who was recently awarded the prestigious Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Prize by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, will be in Regensburg for a research stay of approximately six months.

Professor Zuerch is one of the world’s leading researchers in the field of ultrafast X-ray spectroscopy. Using innovative methods, he is uncovering new insights into the electronic structures and dynamics of quantum systems on attosecond timescales.

During his time in Regensburg, Professor Zuerch will collaborate closely with Professor Dr. Rupert Huber and his team at the RUN, focusing on the question of how direction-dependent charge movements in quantum materials can be directly observed for the first time. With its state-of-the-art infrastructure, the RUN offers ideal conditions for this: by using the latest light-wave methods, the movements of electrons can be visualized on extremely short time scales and along different crystal directions. The experiments complement studies from his laboratory in Berkeley and provide important insights for understanding these materials as well as for potential applications, such as in energy-efficient electronics.

He has also settled into life in Regensburg on a personal level: For his approximately six-month stay, he is bringing his wife and young son, who will be attending the university’s kindergarten during this time.

We extend a warm welcome to Professor Zuerch and his family and look forward to an inspiring collaboration as well as groundbreaking scientific contributions from this international partnership.
