Filming the first moments on the path from light to electricity

Researchers from the RUN at the University of Regensburg, together with colleagues from the University of Marburg, Graz University, and Forschungszentrum Jülich, have achieved a major breakthrough in understanding how electrical energy emerges from light.

Using a novel technique called time-resolved orbital tomography, the team was able to reconstruct and film the earliest moments after light is absorbed by a material. For the first time, they directly observed how an exciton, a quantum-mechanical electron-hole pair, evolves in space and time.

The study, published in Physical Review X, marks an important milestone for the ERC Synergy Project Orbital Cinema and for our understanding of processes that are fundamental to photovoltaics and future energy technologies.
